I have spent my fair share of time making things for my kids with it, and I'm telling you, this stuff is awesome. It stays soft and pliable for little hands -- no kneading necessary. And it's quick to make, so when the little ones are begging for a some play dough time, and you open the container to find either rocks or slime, all is not lost. You can just whip up a new batch. What? You never had your play dough turn into rock? Or worse, get all sticky and slimy? My, my. You really should get out more.
Here's the recipe: (They hand it out for free at the museum, so it's public knowledge).
Mary's Play-Do 1. Boil 2 cups water with 1/2 cup salt and food coloring, stirring to dissolve salt.
2. While still HOT add: 2 cups flour 2 Tbsp cooking oil 2 tsp Alum (you can find it in the spice section of your grocery store)
3. Knead until smooth. At this point it is going to be VERY HOT, so please be careful. It is also going to look like a sticky mess -- It will look like a totally botched recipe. Don't worry. It gets less sticky as it cools, and when you can handle it enough to knead it, it quickly becomes smooth and velvety.
Store in an airtight container. This keeps for quite awhile before getting weird.
