Pickle-Mickle spends a lot of her time around boys. Her brothers are boys (go figure), her friends are boys. I love boys -- I love their spontaneity, their energy, their adventurousness. But I could also see their influence on my little girl. She was less this:
And more this:
The final straw was when she hunted up her long neglected baby doll, carried it into the kitchen, and set it on a stool. I was thrilled to finally see the nurturing side of her nature. Until she pulled out one of the boys' toy guns and started shooting her. I was shocked and appalled. My kids aren't exposed to anything violent. How could she be so cruel? Then she turned around and very sweetly told me she was taking her baby's picture. With a toy gun. I took a deep breath and didn't flip out. I guess she thought the sound of the toy gun sounded like a camera shutter. !?!
Needless to say, it was time for the estrogen in this household to stand up to the testosterone. It was time to bring in the femininity. May-May and I concocted a plan involving playing with dolls, dressing up, and of course, tea parties. May-May has been wonderful with her, and already I'm seeing a difference in her behavior.
This week, Pickle-Mickle and May-May made these cookies for a recent tea party. They are melt-in-your-mouth yummy and easy to make. The only thing that would be better is if they magically made you healthy, strong and skinny. Alas, we can't have everything, can we?
1 cup butter -- no substitutes
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp sea salt
3 tsp. milk
2 1/2 cups freshly ground white wheat flour -- you can use regular flour if you must. These aren't exactly healthy even with the fresh flour.
Cream butter and brown sugar very well in a mixer. Add remaining ingredients and mix until well combined. The dough will be a little crumbly. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Flatten with the tines of a fork, or if you happen to own some cookie stamps, lightly grease them with olive oil and use them to flatten and imprint your cookies. Bake at 350F for about 10-12 minutes, or until just starting to brown on the edges. It would be better to slightly under bake these, rather than over bake them, in my opinion.
Make a pot of tea and enjoy the moment!
Have a great day!
Angela UPDATE: Today, Pickle-Mickle searched up her baby doll and spent the whole evening playing with her, dressing her, cooking for her, feeding her and putting her down for naps. Apparently a tea party is a powerful thing. Why exactly did our culture give them up? Long live the tea party!! (snicker)
