I haven't been on the blog this week because there was a rare occurrence at hand and it needed my undivided attention.
It snowed.
If you live in the north, you can stop laughing and pick yourself up off the floor now. I used to live in Iowa. I know what a blizzard is. Where I live now, however, the weather tends to play snow games. It acts like it's going to snow, the meteorologists assure us it really WILL snow, the grocery store shelves empty out, and we hunker down for the Big One. Often the weather will just taunt us with flurries. And then that's it.
Occasionally we actually get a few inches of snow -- that are gone by lunch.
Sleigh riding? I don't think so.
Snowman building? Not a chance.
If you move fast, you might be able to gather up all the snow in your yard to make a snowball -- to hurl at an unsuspecting passerby. (Don't tell me you've never been tempted.)
It's bad folks.
So when we get real snow that stays on the ground for days, it's cause for celebration. We all know that it might not happen again for the rest of the winter. We make hay while the sun shines. Or rather, we build snowmen while the snow falls...oh never mind.
So when the snow started falling, we had work to do. There was Snow Ice Cream to be made. And Maple Snow Candy. And snowmen. And forts. And sleigh riding. And hot cocoa. And fires in the fireplace.
An entire winter's worth of activity had to be fit into the one week we actually had snow.
This took our full focus. Obviously.
(If you've ever lived in my neck of the woods, you'll know that we more than make up for our lack of significant snow with our freezing rain, icing and tornadoes. Just in case you were packing up to move away from your real blizzards.)
